Moving Image and Sound Project: Evaluation
My documentary is about a student called Hakim, who attends Leyton Sixth Form College and plays for the college basketball team, i decided to create a documentary on him because i felt that basketball had a huge impact in his life, from his childhood to now. My documentary was about him playing basketball for the college and outside of college, i asked him questions about his current state in basketball and question outside the box, the purpose of my documentary was to show my audience what he does and who he is and what he has been through from young. I started this Documentary with him opening up to the audience and revealing his name. He spoke about how his past for example how he didn't get any game time last year and now this year he starts every game, so during the interview he expressed how that effected him , I also added particular visuals so him throwing the basketball, and I also added footage of him playing with his teams and also him during the training period. I came up with this idea because, i personally watch NBA (The National Basketball Association) and before matches start they tend to show the viewers sort clips of upcoming shows and programmes, and i realised that they tend to be documentaries about basket ballers, and it tends to be about where they grew up and how much they had to work from at a young to be where they are now, so i decided to take that concept and make my own documentary about a basket baller that attends my college and have him tell me and the viewers about what he does and how his life's going in basketball. However at first my idea was create a documentary about me, more specifically is was going to be about my 'Youtuber' life, i was going to do a day in life about how i record youtube videos and edit it, and i was going to use other Youtubers and interview them and ask them their experience and general questions. Moreover i decided to change my idea to basketball, i done this because i knew that had a limited amount of time to create a documentary so i wouldn't have had enough time.
In my documentary i included two types of modes, one being participatory and the other is observational, a participatory documentary is when the filmmaker and subject is recorded. This style of documentary includes interviews and the interviewees usually become central to the film. The filmmaker is seen asking questions of their subjects, sharing experiences with them. Different viewpoints are represented and participatory documentaries leave the audience to draw their own conclusions. From my documentary i know i have add that the The film-maker is speaking directly to her/his subjects. (often interviews) And observational mode involves emphasising the documentary filmmaker's engagement in observing the subject's daily life and circumstances and documenting them with an unobtrusive camera. I chose these two modes because i believe that they suited my topic and concept of the documentary, and i believe it worked very well. The techniques i used was only Interview and it was really effective, because it showed the viewers a clear idea on who i was interviewing and why i was interviewing him.
The skills i have developed through this project is how to edit on premier pro, i wasn't really confident with the programme but after this project i feel pretty confident, and i for sure will be using it for my final project, another skill i believe i have developed is the settings on the camera, i learned that i could use the ISO to change the brightness while recording and this helped me a lot, because a lot of my clips had really bad lighting however when i change the ISO, it was in perfect balance. Through all my practice work, i figured out what camera angle is the best for my documentary and i knew when and where to use different types of angles, while editing i figured out how to add two black bars (one on top and one down) this created a effect of a documentary it can be seen on my documentary.
I managed my time really good, the first week i use my time to plan everything out, for example when me and the interviewee had the same breaks so i could interview him at that time, also when he had basketball matches because it only happens once a week which i needed to find out within that week so i could record him the next week, moving onto the second week, i found out all the information needed so then, i booked out a camera and then recorded him training which was on a Monday, moreover the next day i interviewed him which is one day before match day, on Wednesday i recorded him during a match against Havering College, after that day i had all the footage i needed so then on Thursday I uploaded the Videos and started editing, editing took me about 1 week, so it was perfect for the deadline, on the final day of editing i just double checked if it was up to standard and correct for the exam board (which required a 5min documentary) and finally i uploaded my final edit to my blogger. I believe i worked well with my interviewee because there was no issues or any barriers in our way, so i would definitely be working with him in future projects. I think i worked well independently however if there was one issue i would say, it would be while editing, i believe i got distracted while editing however i know this for my final project and i will make sure this issue wont happen again other than that, i worked very well independently.
To conclude, i believe what went well was me and my interviewee working well together, we had no issue what so ever, so this made my work a lot easier, another thing that went well was recording footage of him, i believe i recorded him really well and the camera angles i captured were really good, however one thing i would improve would be the location and consent from others to use facilities, i believe next time i need to reach out the the head of department and ask personally if i could use their facility for a certain specific time.
