Participatory Mode definition and Characteristics.
Definition: In participatory (or interactive) documentaries, the encounter between filmmaker and subject is recorded. This style of documentary includes interviews and the interviewees usually become central to the film. The filmmaker is seen asking questions of their subjects, sharing experiences with them. Different viewpoints are represented and participatory documentaries leave the audience to draw their own conclusions.
Characteristics:
- The acknowledged presence of the camera and crew
- The film-maker speaking directly to her/his subjects (often interviews)
- An emphasis on monologues and dialogues
- Representation of multiple viewpoints, contributing different information
- Editing which maintains logical continuity
- No definitive argument, leaving the audience to decide
